White flakes on the clothes can be embarrassing and could be a distraction to the mind especially when at public gatherings or meetings. Irrespective of the gender and age, it may affect the human population. 

Dandruff can be defined as a condition of the scalp that causes flakes of skin to appear. It is often associated with itching. The exact cause of dandruff is yet to be studied. But various factors which may increase the risk is known. Dandruff cannot be related to poor hygiene but it may be more visible if a person does not wash the hair frequently. 

Even though dandruff may be embarrassing and hard to treat, but help is available.

What are the causes of Dandruff?

The exact cause is unknown. Some probable causes include,

Dry Skin 

Individuals with dry skin are bound to have dandruff. Dandruff that originates from dry skin tends to have smaller, non-oily flakes.

Certain skin conditions

People suffering from psoriasis, eczema, and some other skin diseases tend to get dandruff more frequently than others. Ring worm on scalp generally causes dandruff.

Seborrheic dermatitis

People suffering from seborrheic dermatitis have itchy, oily skin, and they are more likely to have dandruff. Flakes of skin appears that get collected in the hair. As these additional skin cells die and fall off, they blend with the oil from the hair and scalp, framing dandruff
Seborrheic dermatitis is firmly connected with Malassezia, an organism that normally lives on the scalp and feeds on the oils that the hair follicles discharge.
It doesn't generally cause an issue, however in certain individuals it winds up overactive, making the scalp become bothered and to deliver additional skin cells.

Shampooing and skin care products

Certain hair care items can trigger a red, itchy, scaling scalp. Continuous shampooing may cause dandruff, as it can bother the scalp.
Not consuming enough foods that contain zinc, B vitamins, and some types of fats may increase the risk.
Dandruff is almost certain from puberty through middle age, in spite of the fact that it tends to be deep rooted. It affects men more than ladies, perhaps for reasons related to hormones.

What are the symptoms of Dandruff?

  • White, oily-looking flakes of dead skin that dots in the hair and shoulders

  • Cradle cap is a type of dandruff that can affect babies. This causes a scaly, crusty scalp most commonly seen in newborns, but it can occur anytime during infancy.  Cradle cap isn't risky and usually clears up on its own.
Neem or ‘Indian Lilac’ for eliminating Dandruff

Neem is a powerhouse medicinal values. It is an effective anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antibacterial agent and destroys dandruff.

A hand full of neem leaves is to be taken and boiled. Allow it to cool by its own. Apply this to the scalp and gently massage it to spread uniformly. Keep this for some time and wash it.

Black Pepper and Yogurt Mix

Time immemorial, yogurt has been recognized as a reliable source to remove scaling on the scalp. Black pepper is widely used; it’s also known for its excellent anti-fungal action. When both these are mixed together, they serve as a matchless remedy to eradicate dandruff.  

2 teaspoons of black pepper are taken and ground into a fine powder and to this mix 1 cup of fresh yogurt is to be added. Apply it properly to the hair roots on the scalp and leave it undisturbed for 30 minutes. Afterward, wash with any mild shampoo.

Coconut Oil with Lemon Juice

The citric acid in lemon and antibacterial properties of coconut oil is enough to fight out dandruff from your hair. And it’s simple!

To 5 teaspoons of coconut oil mix 1 teaspoon of lemon juice. Apply this mixture on the scalp and leave for 30 minutes. Wash it with a mild shampoo.

Aloe Vera – the wonder herb

Aloe vera is a sort of succulent that is often used in treating skin treatments and beauty care products. Aloe vera is believed to be beneficial in the treatment of dandruff. According to the scientific studies it has significant antibacterial and antifungal properties which aid to fight against dandruff.

Similarly, another study provides evidence that aloe vera was effective against several species of fungi and may help control fungal infections that cause hair loss from the scalp.

Apply the freshly taken out aloe vera pulp and apply in the hair roots and massage vigorously. Leave it in the scalp for 30 mins and then wash in running water. This undoubtedly is an excellent remedy to cure dandruff and naturally moisten and smoothens the hair. 

Cure dandruff naturally with Fenugreek seeds

Fenugreek seeds can expel dandruff with their antifungal properties. This is a very ancient home remedy followed from ancient times.  

Soak a handful of fenugreek seeds in water overnight or 6hours. Grind them thoroughly with water make a smooth paste. Apply on the scalp and leave as such for an hour. Wash off with a mild shampoo.
