Burning Eyes

Burning eyes are very common these days due to various reasons. This condition is very much uncomfortable and sometimes concerning. It is easy to rule out the condition from other eye disorders.

What are the causes of burning eyes?

There are many factors that cause burning of the eyes. 

1. Dry eyes

Dry eyes generally occur when the tear duct does not secret enough tears. Dry eyes are most common in old age and in women. This is a leading cause of burning eyes. 

2. Eye allergies

Eye allergies commonly known as allergic conjunctivitis is a very common issue. Due to the allergy, the body responds by producing histamines, which will lead to burning eyes. Other factors like dust, pollen, smoke, perfume, and pet dander also cause eye allergies. 

3. Environmental Causes 

Dust, Exposure to sun, Smoke, Airborne chemical irritants, Smog, Hair spray, etc. can also lead to the burning of eyes.

4. Eye sunburn

Due to overexposure to ultraviolet radiation, the sun rays causes eye burns which are medically called photokeratitis.  Along with eye burn, symptoms like light sensitivity, pain, watering, etc. also will be exhibited. 

5. Ocular rosacea

In this condition, the main symptom that occurs is the inflammation of eyelids and burning eyes. People who suffer from acne rosacea are more prone to this condition. There are chances for loss of vision in severe cases. 

6. Pterygium

This is a medical condition where there is a growth of fleshy tissue on the white part of the eye. It usually occurs to inner canthus (near to the nose) or in the outer portion of the eye. This is mainly caused due to exposure to UV light and dry eyes. This also triggers as a reason for burning eyes. 

7. Due to old age

During aging, there are high chances that the eyes get dried off and cause a burning sensation. The tear glands get dried up and thus results in burning eyes. 

8. Excess usage of computers or electronic gadgets

This can be listed as one of the most common causes of burning eyes. Due to excess light sensitivity, the eyes dry up and eventually leading to burning eyes.

Swelling in the eye region 

Headache occurs often 

Eye fatigue

In severe cases burning eyes can cause blurred vision.

5 Effective Home Remedies for Burning Eyes

1. Triphala Eyewash

Triphala wash to the eyes is so far the best home remedy known for burning eyes. 

How to Prepare Triphala eyewash:

a) Take 1/2tsp of Triphala powder and boil it in 1 glass of water

b) Once it is boiled, off the stove. 

c) Allow the concoction to cool

d) Strain the liquid before use

e) Wash both the eyes with this Triphala water. 

2. Washing the eyes 

Washing the eyes with crystal clear running water is the best and easiest home remedy which can be followed regularly. Keep on washing the eyes every two hours daily. 

3. Instill drops of pure ghee

In case of burning eyes, instill two drops of lukewarm pure ghee into the eyes and keep it undisturbed for 20mins. 

Repeat this twice daily

This prevents from drying of the eyes and burning sensation in the eyes. 

4. Massage the Scalp

One of the best remedies for burning eyes and eyestrain is massaging the scalp and feet lightly with one teaspoon of castor oil. In hot weather, Coconut oil or Brahmi oil can be preferred. The oil pulls the heat in the eyes and helps in the betterment of the condition.

5. Dietary changes

To strengthen the eyes, it’s very important to consume a balanced diet.

  • Include raw carrot, sprouted chickpeas, stewed apple in the diet. All these are rich sources of Vitamin A which is important for the nourishment of eyes.
  • You can also include Radish, Tomato, Cucumber and Lettuce in the diet.
  • Hydrate yourself adequately. This itself can help to reduce the dryness in the eyes and prevents burning of the eyes.  
  • Almonds are also a very good remedy for nourishing the eyes. This can be consumed alone or can be ground with milk and taken daily. 
  • Regular consumption of Amla (Indian gooseberry) also helps to strengthen the eyes and prevents eye disorders
